It is imperative that you have a few non weighted flies for salt water flats fishing. Sometimes the water you are fishing is less than a foot deep. A weighted fly hitting the water would instantly spook the entire flat. Now add this flies also included weed guard and turtle grass flats are no problem. If there is no weeds just shallow water, clip the weedguard off and continue fishing.
While fishing pancake flats of Los roques a few years ago this pattern was a trip saver. Picture a hard packed circular flat topped mountain of sand covered in turtle grass (especially around its perimeter). These tables of sand were surrounded by deeper water. Bonefish climbed up onto these flats all day long but it seemed these flats were best with less than a foot of water. Any fly that was weighted got stuck immediately in the weeds and spooked any nearby fish instantly. I hardly ever fished this pattern before but the guide liked the colour and its non-weighted construction, we tried it and the tight lines began. I will never fish a saltwater flat without a few of these in my fly box.
